Zuckerberg to give away 99% of Facebook shares

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will give 99 per cent of his shares in the company, currently worth about $45 billion, for a philanthropy project.

Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said in a letter to their newborn daughter on Tuesday that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will focus on advancing human potential and promoting equality. The duo will control the new initiative jointly.

The 31-year-old Zuckerberg, who is also Facebook's CEO, joins Microsoft founder Bill Gates and billionaire Warren Buffett in giving away a large part of their wealth for philanthropic ventures.

In the letter of their baby Maxima, nicknamed Max, Zuckerberg and his doctor wife Priscilla Chan wrote, “As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalised learning, curing diseases, connecting people and building strong communities.

We will give 99 per cent of our Facebook shares—currently worth about $45 billion—during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared with all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.”

Zuckerberg owns about four million Class A shares in Facebook and approximately 419 million super-voting shares, Facebook said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday.
