Walmart India names Pankaj More as technology head

Wal-Mart India Pvt Ltd, wholly owned subsidiary of the world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc, has appointed Pankaj More as head - technology, the company said in the statement.

Pankaj will report to Krish Iyer, president and CEO, Wal-Mart India, and will play a key role in strengthening Walmart India’s technology and IT infrastructure.

He had joined Walmart in January 2013 and has been leading ISD strategy for Walmart Asia market (China, Japan and India) by driving financial transparency, creating technology roadmap, leveraging cost and implementing project governance.

“His depth of knowledge and global experience will bring a fresh perspective to our business. Pankaj is a strong addition to our Walmart India team,” Iyer said in the statement.

Pankaj has around two decades of experience across telecom, financial services, energy and retail. He also has experience in technology development, engineering and ERP platforms, driving IT strategy for business and operations.

He did B.Tech in Computer Engineering from Mangalore University.

Last month, the company appointed Ashwin Mittal as chief financial officer and Javier Rojo as head of real estate and business development.

In October, the company had appointed Murali Lanka as chief operating officer (COO) effective from December 1, 2014.

Walmart had a joint venture with Bharti Enterpries. However, in October 2013, Wal-Mart Stores announced that it is buying out Bharti Enterprises in their equal equity wholesale retail joint venture Bharti Walmart, marking a split in their retail venture.

The employees of the JV firm were given the option of either working with Walmart India for its existing wholesale cash and carry retail chain or for Bharti Retail.

Now Bharti Retail independently operates neighbourhood retail chains under the Easyday brand spread across north India besides states like Maharashtra in the west and Karnataka in the south.
